Purrrfect……the cat is living sustainably too!

When doing our carbon footprint score with World Wildlife Fund one of the factors that scored against us was having an animal, in our case Suki the cat. At first, I didn’t really understand why this was the case. However after giving this some thought we realised that we were feeding the cat with unrecycleable Whiskas pouches.

I have to mention Suki here, as she is extremely fussy when it comes to food. If we give her anything other than Whiskas wet food in gravy she refuses to eat. The last time we tried this it was 3 days of hunger protest. Even if we change the gravy for jelly, she won’t eat it – does she not realise there are starving cats out there!

When looking in the supermarkets for a more sustainable option there is very limited option other than dry cat food in a cardboard box or wet in pouches when it came to Whiskas. Further research was required! After a quick search on the internet found the following Whiskas cat food in GRAVY in cans for £15.95. This works out at £1.65 per Kg.

Whereas the pouches which come in much smaller packs and works out at £4.82 per Kg.

So not only is the tin of the can recyclable it is cheaper and that is just purr-fect for us. There is still plastic packing of the tins, at least this plastic is recyclable and much less than the pouches. Another little victory for sustainability.

We live in Plymouth in Devon and this Christmas 2017-8 our family has been watching Blue Planet II endlessly! Our New Year's resolution for 2018 is to take better care of our environment and to live more sustainably. We are using a blog to remember our journey and maybe share with others what we have learnt along the way.
